We are excited to announce our guild challenge for 2024. We’ve chosen the theme of Community with a specific challenge to reimagine a traditional block and construct a quilt using whatever technique you want – piecing, improv, applique etc.
Each of us are members of multiple communities – your family, our guild, your neighborhood, your church etc. There are no rules here on how to interpret the theme – just use the word community as the touchstone for your design.
Here are a few examples –
- Think about your different communities and what they mean to you and use these feelings as an inspiration for your design. For example:
- use the team colors from your child’s school as the color palette
- the doorway to your church has an interesting shape
- You grew up with six siblings so you build a quilt with 7 blocks or 7 colors
- Invite a member(s) of your community to contribute to the quilt. For example:
- a friend to gives fabric scraps to use
- a friend adds some hand-stitching to your project
- Repurpose fabric from your dad’s shirts
There were 54 quilts in the category of Modern Traditionalism at QuiltCon and this is the MQG category that we are exploring with this challenge. Modern Traditionalism is the use of an identifiable traditional block, modernized in some way, using design techniques like (but not limited to) color, scale, symmetry, and grid placement. We reviewed several examples from QuiltCon 2024 – you can see them in these charts.
Official Guidelines:
- Quilt can be of any size
- Quilt must be finished (i.e. quilted) and either bound or faced
- Quilt must be finished between March 11 and October 24, 2024
- Quilt design must be original
- Each guild member is allowed one individual challenge entry. Guild members can contribute to multiple entries but a specific group of quilters is allowed one group entry.
- Prizes will be awarded for Viewer’s Choice and randomly to at least one participant
We are thrilled to announce that Oliso, Cary Quilting and Fat Quarter Shop will be sponsoring this year’s challenge. There will be prizes for Viewer’s Choice plus random prizes awarded to those who participate in the challenge.
