Announcing Sarah Hibbert Lecture and Workshop

We are excited to announce that Sarah Hibbert will be visiting our guild. Sarah will share a collection of her work in a trunk show on Saturday, May 24, and will teach a workshop on Sunday, May 25. (See details below.)

Sarah Hibbert is a modern British quilter influenced as much by art and architecture as quilting heritage. She has made a significant name for herself on both sides of the Atlantic, which has seen her work shown as well as being acquired for both public and private collections.

Her Reflections quilt was acquired by The Quilters’ Guild of the British Isles in 2019 for their permanent collection to represent modern quilting. Sarah has also had two of her recent quilts acquired by The International Quilt Museum in Nebraska.

As of July 2023, Sarah has been newly appointed Ambassador to The Quilters’ Guild of the British Isles, Modern Group. This is a totally new role, and Sarah is very excited about inspiring new and existing quilters.

Sarah loves the combination of old and new; of the traditional and contemporary; she uses patterns passed down through the generations but always adds a twist of her own. Working mainly in linen textural fabric, hand stitching, natural, rich tones and clever, but limited use of prints, she brings her quilts into the modern vibe of design to create a conversation between the fabrics.

Sarah’s second love is paper collage which has encouraged her to broaden her color palette. From these simple paper creations, she has taken her designs through to quilt layouts and finished quilts. She loves seeing her design in two different mediums. This is what has inspired her first book From Collage to Quilt: Inspirational Quilting from What You Have which was published by Lucky Spool 2022.

Tickets for the following events will be available for TMQG purchase on Saturday, April 19, at 10 am. Members, watch your email for registration links. Both events take place in the Cary Quilting Company classroom, 935 N Harrison Ave., Cary.

Freestyle Patchwork Workshop: Sunday, May 25, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

TMQG member fee is $80 for workshop and trunk show or $70 just for the workshop. There are 15 seats available.

Freestyle patchwork is a form of improvisational piecing allowing your fabrics to decide where they should be pieced to make the best of them. It takes the guessing game out of choosing which fabrics to go together. It is a perfect way to use up scraps from other projects or using those extra special pieces you have been saving for just the right project.

You will be matching your pieced fabrics up by size and not color, building on each block as it grows, rather than color combinations. The key to bringing the colours into a perfect balance is choosing the fabrics with a highlight accent to make that spark. Trust your instincts! This technique is easily adaptable to either a grid pattern or a circular abstract pattern. We will cover both ideas. The workshop will also cover basic quilting ideas for your piece, along with binding.

Registration for both events opens on Saturday, April 19, at 10 am. TMQG members will receive an email with the links for purchasing a seat.

Workshop seats will be refundable (minus a $7 transaction fee) if the seat is filled from a waitlist. Lecture and trunk show seats are nonrefundable.

The Freestyle Patchwork Workshop is currently sold out. If interested, add your name to the waitlist and you will be contacted if a spot becomes available.
