Block Lottery – Complementary Color Blocks

We had 28 blocks and one lucky winner for our April Log Cabin blocks and are excited to announce our May block is a complementary Color Block. Get out that color wheel, and find some unexpected and new combinations for striking visual impact!  This block can be any design as long as two colors are used in each block that are complementary.  We do ask that this month’s blocks be solids or blenders, so that the colors shine.

Blocks should be 9.5” unfinished. Try some improv, try some curves, make it scrappy, make it your own!

Every month, we’ll announce a quilt block for members to make for the following month’s guild meeting. You can make as many blocks as you want and for every block you make, you will be entered into a drawing for ALL THE BLOCKS! From there, winners can let their creativity fly with the block winnings.

Here are the details for the May block:

Block: Complementary Colors

Description: Using a piecing technique of your choice, make a block using two complementary colors

Block Size: 9.5 in. x 9.5 in. unfinished

Fabric: Choice of two complementary colors (solids or blenders).

Skill to Explore: Piecing, color value, curves, improv, complementary colors

So, what are complementary colors?

Complementary colors are colors that are opposite from each other on the color wheel. See the infographic below for some examples:

There will be specific instructions every month but here’s a few rules for participating in the Block Lottery:

Rules:

Follow the guidelines for the block announced at each meeting

  • Use quilt store quality cotton for your blocks unless announced otherwise
  • 1 block = 1 entry into the lottery; bring all completed blocks to the meeting to be eligible for the drawing
  • Multiple winners may be drawn depending on the number of blocks submitted
  • Have fun!
