Block Lottery – Black and White (March)

Every month, we’ll announce a quilt block for members to make for the following month’s guild meeting. You can make as many blocks as you want and for every block you make, you will be entered into a drawing for ALL THE BLOCKS! From there, winners can let their creativity fly with the block winnings.

For March 2026, we are collecting blocks using only black and white!

Here are the details for the March block:

Description: Create a 12.5 in. x 12.5 in. unfinished block using only black and white fabrics (solid or print). If using a print, the fabric must be primarily black or white. Black and white, or “notan” is a core design element in Japanese art.  Notan focuses on the simplified, black-and-white design of a pattern and on the harmony and balance of light and dark masses (positive and negative shapes) rather than details or color with the goal of creating pleasing visual flow.

Block Size: 12.5 in. x 12.5 in unfinished

Fabric: Each block should primarily utilize black and white, prints or solids.  If using a print, the print should be primarily black or white.

Skill to Explore: Contrast, Piecing, Improv, Scrap Use

Instructions:

  • Dig through your scraps to find black and white prints and solids, any shape or size will do!
  • Piece together your scraps using any block design or method.
  • Trim your block into an unfinished 12.5 in. x 12.5 in square
