August Block lottery – Village House Blocks

Every month, we’ll announce a quilt block for members to make for the following month’s guild meeting. You can make as many blocks as you want and for every block you make, you will be entered into a drawing for ALL THE BLOCKS! From there, winners can let their creativity fly with the block winnings.

For our August 2026 block lottery we are making Village House Blocks!

Block: Village Blocks

Description: Create a 5.5 in. x 7 in. unfinished village or tree block

Block Size: 5.5 in. x 7 in. unfinished

Fabric: Choose any fabrics (prints or solids) for your house (or tree) block.  Use a primarily white/off-white background fabric (prints or solids – other colors in the print ok!)

Skill to Explore: Scrap Use, contrast

Instructions:

  1. Choose your fabrics! Use any fabrics for your house, roof, and door (or tree), use a primarily white/off-white background fabric (either print or solid, other colors in a print are ok as long as it’s primarily white/off-white).
  2. For the house, you will need:  One – 2 1/2” x 4 1/2” rectangles and Two – 2” x 2 1/2” rectangles.  For the roof and door, you will need:  One – 5” square cut in half on the diagonal and One – 1 1/2” x 2 1/2” rectangle. For the background fabric, you need one – 4” square (cut in half on the diagonal) and Two – 1” x 4 1/2” rectangles.
  3. To make the roof, select your roof triangle and the 4” background triangles. Sew a 4” background triangle to the roof triangle (like you’re making flying geese), press and trim.  Add a 4” background triangle to the other side of the roof triangle and press. Trim your roof section to measure 3” x 5 1/2”.
  4. To make the house, select the following: One – 2 1/2” x 4 1/2” house rectangle, Two – 2” x 2 1/2” house rectangles, One – 1 1/2” x 2 1/2” door, and the Two – 1” x 4 1/2” background rectangles.  Sew the small house rectangles to each side of the door. When pieced together, sew the large house rectangle to the top of the door section.  Then, sew the background rectangles to each side of the pieced house section. Finally, sew the roof to the top of the house. Your completed house block should measure 5 1/2” x 7”. See diagram
